The different kinds of mesothelioma have different levels of severity. Pericardial mesothelioma is noted as one of the most severe types of asbestos related cancers. Long term exposure to asbestos related materials proves to affect the protective lining around the heart. Due to the symptoms being dormant within a persons body for more than thirty years, pericardial mesothelioma is often found and diagnosed when the cancer is most advanced.

The lining that surrounds the heart is so important because it produces a lubricating fluid that fills the chest cavity around the heart. The tissue surrounding the heart aids in the protection of the heart as it expands and contracts. The pericardium and the fluid around the heart also prevent the sensitive tissue from any friction.

When pericardial mesothelioma arises, a person’s begins to exhibit types of cancerous growth around the tissues of the heart. These abnormalities cause the lubrication of the cells around the heart to become infringed upon.

Symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma

Often times, it is difficult to determine whether or not a patient has pericardial mesothelioma. The symptoms of this type of cancer are said to closely resemble those of cardiovascular disease. The early symptoms that are recognizable by a patient include: chest pain, cough, shortness of breath, chest palpitations and irregular heartbeat.

Since pericardial mesothelioma is the least common form of this type of cancer, doctors are unable to tell how asbestos fibers become lodged within the heart. Unfortunately, since this type of cancer is found so late, it can often time spread to the lungs, causing secondary lung cancer. It is often times recognized by doctors that after the asbestos lodges into the lungs, some particles move into the blood stream and end up inflaming the lining around the heart.

Pericardial Mesothelioma Diagnosis and Treatment

Like any type of cancer, catching it at the earliest stage is ideal. Moreover, a proper diagnosis helps tremendously in deciding on the treatment process. The most effective way to determine whether or not this type of cancer has indeed infected the heart is through image testing. In order to determine the stage and severity of the cancer, a doctor may wish to run a CT scan, an MRI scan or a biopsy. This proper diagnosis is important because this type of cancer is so rare. There are other medical complications that need to be filtered out before treatment for this cancer begins.

It is difficult to determine whether or not surgery is the best way to remove the cancerous cells. It is often suggested that even with surgery, not all of the cells with be removed from around the heart. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy, however, are the most commonly used procedure to fight the deadly disease. Both of these tests need to be closely monitored to assure that only the unhealthy cells are being treated.
